Confirmation

What Is Confirmation?

Confirmation is a way to help youth learn more about their Christian faith and what it means in their daily lives. Students will learn about God and Christ, about the Bible, about the Church, and about using Christian values to help make life decisions. They also learn about themselves as they begin to think about the faith journey each of them will be on for the rest of their lives. The biggest thing that Confirmation offers is the chance to affirm the promises made at baptism by saying YES to God.

In our confirmation classes we teach the Bible and the traditions of the Christian church. While we do give them a lot of information on what Christians believe there is even more emphasis on how to think faithfully about life and the many issues they will face. Rev. Baugh's pastor liked to say “This is confirmation, not conformation.” In other words, we are here to strengthen and confirm the faith of the students, not to make them conform to a set of answers.

Rev. Matthew Baugh and Larry McCure are the confirmation teachers. For more information you can contact either of them.

When will confirmation be?

There is no Confirmation schedulled for the school year of 2006-2007. Confirmation will resume in the late Summer of 2007 and continue through late Spring of 2008. Confirmands will be presented to the church on Pentecost Sunday of 2008. Classes are held on Sunday from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm with lunch from 12:30-1:00 pm.

What do my children need for confirmation?

The most important thing is committment. The youth are expected to be in class regularly, to participate and to take their faith seriously. There is a fair amount of homework (which will be posted on the website) and youth are expected to show up with it completed. Parents are expected to having the youth at confirmation each week and to take turns preparing lunch. There are a few items that each student will need:

• A three ring binder for handouts and homework.

• Pen or pencil.

• A Bible.

• The name of a mentor who they will be in touch with regularly over the course of the class. The mentor should be an adult other than a parent. The mentor will offer encouragement, guidance and support throughout the class.

• Homework will be given regularly? My expectation is that completed homework will be brought to the next class.
